Young girl riding her cream-coloured horse Honey along a sunlit woodland path, symbolising trusting life through change and uncertainty.

Change is scary, especially when we can't see what lies ahead.

As a child, Ana-Alayana dreaded the words, “We are moving.” Each move meant leaving behind a home, friends and things she loved. But years later, while writing her story, she discovered something about those painful goodbyes that she had never seen before.

If you're facing change or uncertainty in your own life, Ana's story offers a beautiful reminder that we can learn to trust Life, even when we don't know where it's taking us.

Life Lessons & Key Themes From This Story

  • Trusting Life Through Change – We may not know where change is taking us, but past experiences can remind us that we are capable of finding our way.

  • Finding Your Feet After Change – Leaving behind what feels familiar can be painful. With time, we can build new connections, find belonging and begin to feel at home again.
  • Looking Back Can Change the Story – When we revisit difficult experiences from where we stand today, we may discover meaning, support or patterns we couldn't see while living through them.
  • Feeling Alone Doesn't Mean We Are Alone – Help and connection can appear in unexpected forms, sometimes before we even recognise how much we need them.
  • Divine Support & Trust in God – Looking back on difficult or uncertain times can reveal ways God was guiding and supporting us that we couldn't recognise at the time.

"We are moving"

As soon as I heard those three words, my heart started to beat quicker.

We’d just finished renovating our home. It was finally so cosy. I had put so much effort into helping my parents with the alterations and was excited about living in such a beautiful house.

But there I stood in the kitchen, still smelling of fresh paint, with my best friend beside me, hearing that we were leaving.

I cried my eyes out. It hit so very hard.

The Heartbreak and Happiness of Change

Growing up, we were always moving house, sometimes even countries.

My parents dreamed of living in the countryside and becoming self-sufficient. Each time we moved they came a little closer to their dream by upgrading the property and purchasing more land.

For me, though, every move was heart-wrenching.  Just as I had settled in, made new friends and begun to feel at home, I had to leave something I loved behind.

Will I ever get to stay somewhere, keep my friends and feel at home?  I wondered.

Will I ever get to stay somewhere, keep my friends and feel at home? I wondered.

One of the hardest losses came after my family had run a riding school for two years. During that time, I felt so lucky and happy to have my own horse.

I called her Honey.
WOW, what a Blessing she was!

She was gorgeous, with a cream-coloured coat, blue eyes and the loveliest temperament. I poured all my love into her, grooming her, plaiting her mane and tail, and riding her through the woods.

I was told to kick her when I wanted her to jump, but I just couldn't. She jumped with perfect timing all by herself.

We were one heart and a soul.
My precious Honey.

It was absolutely devastating having to sell her when our riding school failed. I wanted to disappear into a hole in the ground. It was like losing my best friend. I felt the loss of Her deeply within my Heart.

Soon after, I was gifted a wonderful dog.

I chose a highly intelligent, beautiful black-and-white border collie, Skip, whose mother herded sheep in the mountains.

I was so happy again!

As with Honey, we were inseparable! I taught her how to sit and stay, and much more. She had such a placid and beautiful nature, and I trusted her with all my heart. She became a constant in my life of motion and moving. A blessing for sure!

When Life Began to Show Me the Way

Over time, I began to notice something.

After being in each new place for a while, my new life always seemed to turn out for the positive. I found new friends. I settled in. My life became fun again.

One of the biggest moves we made was from England to Wales.
And, here again Life was ahead of me...

On my last day of school, before the actual move, I got onto the school bus and sat beside a girl I didn't know.

We got into a conversation.
It was her first day at our school. She had just moved house too.

When she told me where she had moved from, I could hardly believe it.

“Aberaeron, in Wales.”

That was exactly where I was moving, hundreds of miles away. And I would be attending the same school she had just left.  Wow! Incredible!

She told me she would let her best friend know I was coming.

A week later, I arrived at my new school. Two girls were asked to show me around, but they seemed to have little interest in me. Once again, I felt the discomfort of being somewhere I didn't belong.

Then, all of a sudden, a very happy and positive girl called Aloka walked up to me.

She was the bus girl’s best friend!

Aloka said she would look after me. We hit it off straight away, and she became a very close friend for years after that.

How awesome!

Through these experiences, I was learning something I couldn't have known as that little girl standing in the freshly painted kitchen.

Wherever I land in the world, it is okay. I will be alright.

I will settle down. I will meet new people, with new ways. A Positive New Life is Always Awaiting me. Life is Good!

It’s funny. When I started writing this story, I didn't realize how much God had been there for me all along!

Looking Back, I See My Story Differently

I had always felt so alone as a child.

Yet now, as I write these lines and look back at everything that happened, I can see my story differently.

When I lost my precious Honey, Skip came into my life and became my constant companion. When I was frightened about moving hundreds of miles away and having to make friends all over again, somehow, before I even arrived, a girl on a school bus was telling Aloka that I was coming!

Now I fully realise how I was Divinely Supported all along my journey. And those three words that once filled me with so much sorrow and fear...

“We are moving.”

...no longer mean to me what they once did.

In Truth, We Are Never Alone. When we cannot see what is waiting ahead, we can relax into the flow of Life, noticing the Divine Support available to us along the way.

Life really is on our side.
