Woman sharing a joyful moment with a dolphin in clear turquoise water during a life-changing experience

What happens when a story you once believed begins to shift?

In this beautifully written micro memoir, Ellen revisits a magical encounter and the unsettling awareness that followed long after the moment had passed.

Through her story, readers are invited to reflect on the stories we tell ourselves, our longing for connection, and the quiet courage it takes to question the meaning we attach to our experiences.

Life Lessons & Key Themes From This Story

  • The stories we tell ourselves about an experience shape the meaning we attach to it.
  • Reflection can challenge what we once believed about a moment, experience, or connection.
  • Awareness does not always erase the beauty of a memory. A moment can still hold wonder, even as our understanding evolves.

The water—much colder than I anticipated—added a layer of clarity and a frisson of anticipation to this encounter. I can’t explain it, but I longed to connect to this beautiful—and mysterious—creature. Her skin was not slick, but warm and rubbery, like a helium balloon near to bursting. When she rose beside me, her weight displaced the water, and I rocked back a bit off my feet, buoyed by my life vest. She was quiet. I was not afraid. The trainer cued her, and she leaned in, pressing a kiss to my cheek—gentle, deliberate.

Suddenly the water’s chill was replaced with warmth as I laughed, startled by the intimacy of the moment. The choreography: the way she turned, the way I was guided to place my hand just so. Was it wrong that, in the moment, it felt like something shared rather than performed?

Later, I would realize: that dolphins in captivity do not choose these encounters, that their demeanor can be mistaken for consent. It was easy to believe otherwise. The trainers were caring, called her by name, rewarded her. She seemed, if not happy, then at least at ease. As she dove away leaving a swirl of cool water, I was still wrapped in the warmth of the moment. I left with the memory of that kiss and the—perhaps misguided—willingness to believe the illusion—unsure whether I had touched something pure—or simply participated in some beautiful make believe.

  • I think it was a wonderful experience. However, my husband has been discouraging me from participating in these kinds of activities because he believes they can disrupt the animal’s natural behavior. And honestly, he does have a point. These animals don’t really get to choose these encounters so it’s important to consider their welfare as well.

  • Her memory and reactions are valid. Yes, wildlife/sealife held in captivity can be the most maddening thing because none of us would love to be imprisoned. However, the reality is that the world in general can be both a cruel and caring place and opposites do co-exist.

  • I really enjoyed reading this! Stories like this really make you pause and think about the choices and moments that shape our lives!

  • Dolphins are just so special, I can’t think of anyone who would not love reading a story with dolpins in. They are so playful and cheerful and loving, we can definitely learn something here.

  • This story carries the pause and think energy where a single moment ripples into something deeper. The reflection on whether life’s strange turns are magical or misguided makes the piece quietly unforgettable.

  • I love the idea that even as our awareness of situations change, it doesn’t mean that the meaning of a moment in our past has to be any less important or special.
