It was a special day I will never forget, but there was just one problem. My sweet Nathan couldn’t see me on our wedding day. As we held hands and said “I do” he never saw my dress, the flowers, or the love in my eyes as I became his wife.
Have you ever thought about how good can come from life's toughest moments? I have!

I was born in 1980 with spina bifida and have undergone thirty-four painful surgeries, each followed by long recoveries. After my thirty-third surgery left me paralyzed, I spent more than ten years living in nursing homes in Oklahoma. Nursing home life was lonely and I felt out of place with people who were so much older than me.
Despite the challenges, I've discovered countless blessings and joy by embracing life.
A Love Story I Never Expected
In 2016, I met Nathan, the man of my hope and prayers. We bonded over art and our shared love of mushroom and extra-cheese pizza. He was sweet, kind, and loved me SO much. For two years, we built a life outside the nursing home, but when complications from his type 1 diabetes worsened, we had to return.
One night, as we watched a television show together, Nathan turned to me, his voice quieter than usual. “We’ve been through a lot,” he said. “And I would give anything to marry you.” Then, he got down on both knees and asked, “Will you marry me?”
“Yes, yes, yes,” I cried!
I was thrilled to become a bride and finally found a beautiful dress. After asking for bakery recommendations on Facebook, a kind woman offered to be our wedding planner. She connected us with a photographer who generously provided a free package, and everything fell into place.
On our wedding day, the church looked stunning with a beautiful altar and vibrant purple rose petals. My dress fit perfectly, making me feel like a princess. Surrounded by friends and family, I was overjoyed to marry the man I loved, exchanging the vows “until death do us part”.

Our Wedding Day Challenge and An Unexpected Blessing
But there was one bittersweet aspect to the day:
Nathan couldn’t see me or the beauty around us. Little did we know, our miracle was on the way.
Shortly after our wedding, Nathan had an eye doctor appointment that changed everything. I was nervous, hoping for good news, and to our delight, he learned he would have surgery to fix his vision—a chance to see the world again.
The surgery went well, and a few days post-op, Nathan was eager to remove his eye bandage. I worried it was too soon, but he squeezed my hand and smiled. "I just want to see your pretty face again."
How could I resist that?
With excitement and nerves, he peeled off the bandage, blinked a few times, and looked at me.
"Yep, you're just as beautiful as ever," he grinned.
Tears filled my eyes. In that moment, I felt overwhelming love and gratitude. When he finally removed the bandage for good, I couldn't wait to show him our wedding photos, and we both cried happy tears over the beautiful memories captured.
Tears filled my eyes. In that moment, I felt overwhelming love and gratitude.
My sweet Nathan passed away on March 20, 2019, just 10 months after our marriage, leaving a significant void in my life. Nathan taught me to be strong in the face of adversities, no matter what my situation is. He showed me how to live a playful and happy life in spite of the pain.
Love, Resilience, and Finding Light in the Dark
Life is about the journey, and while we can't control the ups and downs, we can choose happiness and face challenges with resilience.
My story illustrates that blessings can emerge from our darkest times. Our reactions shape our experiences. When I became paralyzed, I chose joy despite my circumstances. Instead of resenting our struggles, Nathan and I chose to seek joy and blessings in our lives.
We knew that we were not walking this journey alone. In life we must make a commitment to live in love, positivity, grace, and mercy. Only then, will we truly discover blessings from within the dark.
