It felt like something huge was going to happen in my life.

I was sixteen, and everything was clicking into place.

I had just come off a fifty-to-sixty-goal season with my football club, Leixlip United. My manager showed me a scouting letter from Real Madrid. They were closely monitoring me. That same summer, I trialled for Inter Milan on the television show Football’s Next Star and was called into the Irish team.

My dream of becoming a professional footballer was in the palm of my hands or, on the tip of my boot, I should say.

As a boy growing up in what many called the rough part of Dublin, I watched so many teens turn to drink and drugs, fighting and football. That’s how it was.

 For me, it was football and my father.

I used to watch superhero films with characters like Superman and Batman. That was my father to me. He gave me confidence and an untouchable courage I carried onto the pitch.

But life can change in a heartbeat.

Knocked Off Course

When my dad took his own life, I lost him and much of myself with him. The confidence he had helped build disappeared. Grief became a huge weight I dragged across the pitch every time I played.

Then, a few months later, I suffered one of the worst injuries a footballer can face. I tore my cruciate ligament.

Had I lost my dream too?

Recovery became an agonising cycle of icepacks and exercises, followed by excruciating pain as the scar tissue in my knee and hamstring was broken down. 

Every day, I pictured myself back on the pitch. Weeks became months. One year became two.

Finally, I returned to training wearing a bulky knee brace. I was terrified of going into that first tackle, but I kept running. Every extra sprint and every cold night brought me closer to the player I had once been.

For ninety minutes, the problems of the world could not reach me. Football felt like wrapping myself in the warmest blanket on the coldest night.

When Determination Opens a Door

Then I received a call from Ryan Maxwell.

“I’ve seen some video clips,” he said. “A lot of it is magical. I think you’ve got a really good chance of succeeding in England.”

He offered me a chance to sign for AFC Sudbury.

My stomach flipped with excitement. Everything I had fought for had led to this moment.

But the opportunity came with a price.

Chasing The Dream

Leaving for England meant leaving Ireland and, most painfully, my unborn daughter, Emily. Her mum and I were no longer together, but I wanted to give Emily the opportunities I never had growing up. I believed football could help me provide her with stability, a college or university education and the best chance for a bright future.

I boarded the plane carrying equal amounts of hope and heartbreak.

England was far from the glamorous football life I had imagined. There were times I had to choose between paying the rent and eating properly. I waited tables, worked behind a bar and laboured in construction. Already exhausted, I would pick up my boots and head to training.

Some nights I lay awake wondering whether I should pack my bags and return to Ireland.

Was I doing the right thing? Was being away from Emily worth it?

No matter how many miles separated us, she remained part of my life. I flew home whenever I could. I tucked her into bed when I was there and called her when I was not. Whenever doubt crept in, I came back to my reason for leaving.

Refusing to Give Up

As the years passed, life brought more loss. My gran died from cancer. Then my sister took her own life - the same cruel thief that took my dad. Then my uncle died suddenly from a heart attack.

I learnt that grief does not become lighter. You just build the strength to carry it.

When I was young, I wanted to make my dad and grandad proud. They were my reason to keep going. Now I had Emily, and she gave me another reason.

Through grief, sacrifice and years of hard work, I built a career in football, making many appearances in the National League. Away from the pitch, I worked my way into management at a construction firm.

As a boy, I looked at my dad as though he were Superman. My grandad was my hero too. Now, I’m doing my best to be the hero my own children need: someone who will always be there to love them, guide them and protect them.

If I could speak to that sixteen-year-old boy today, I would tell him:

You are going to pursue your dream, and there are going to be a lot of things that feel like they’re killing you.  But you will keep going. One day, you will discover something far greater than the future you pictured.

You will become the man your family can run home to.
