About the Storyteller
My name is Katie Harris and I started a nonprofit to help individuals in need receive a service dog, speak out on chronic illness/mental health struggles, and educate on support dogs. I have a genetic disorder called Ehlers Danlos and my service dog, Moxie, and I are dedicated to living each day with the goal of making a difference in the world.

What Happened After Sharing His Story
How did you feel when you were first invited to share your story?
I felt incredibly honored and so very thankful. I have never submitted something in my own words, and was a bit nervous, but they made the process so much easier with incredible coaching and help.
Describe any personal benefits sharing your story has brought you:
My service dog was in the middle of a pretty big contest for the National Hero Dog Award, which is a big deal... Sharing this with our story not only gave individuals an opportunity to vote, but also gave me an opportunity to share what we do.
What was the greatest challenge you had sharing your story?
My biggest challenge I had was myself and insecurities of not being a “writer”. I overcame it by getting out of my own way and allowing Karletta Marie to give feedback and suggestions.
Were you helped in any way by the process the DIL team used to help you develop your story?
I was! I was helped develop a better structure for the story, highlighting things that would be good to elaborate. I am beyond happy with how it turned out!
Did sharing help you understand yourself more deeply? What were your greatest lessons?
It reminded me more of what I have overcome in a more retrospective way. It reminded me that “I can do hard things” and there is always, always hope. We can have struggles and feel hard things…that’s a part of life and okay. It was pretty amazing to see where I was before and where I am now.
Did you enjoy the response you received from others in relation to your story? How So?
I did! Out of all the places a story about me was posted, this one received the most engagement. Very thankful.
Did sharing your story have an impact on others in any way?
I believe so and brought some hope in their lives by reading some of the comments, but you never really know what impact occurs with others!
Would you recommend others share their story?
100%…it’s an incredible opportunity to put your thoughts and experience down in words and share. I think anyone would be honored to be a part of that.
