Barely a sound. Not even the chirp of birds, as there were no trees.

It was like the Void. Not a vehicle in sight. I wondered if I’d chosen the right road and how long it would take me to get a lift. I continued walking, like a lost deer in an ocean of greens, a few houses fading into the distance.

This wasn’t my first time hitchhiking.

Stepping Into the Unknown

Three months earlier, I had been called to leave Quebec and travel toward a province in Alberta, completely unknown to me. I had landed on a farm where I exchanged work for room and board. It had become my new home, my safe place, my only “illusory” security.

Now, weirdly, three random people told me I needed to go toward Drumheller, a place with no bearings for me at all. I was in shock God was calling me to jump into the vast unknown again.

I tried to make sense of it. There was no reason to go. I had no money to rent a room or buy food, and I had no one to visit. The journey felt impossible.

After a week of crying out my fear, I stopped asking ‘why’ and prepared to leave.

Friday morning, the farm owner drove me to the intersection where I would start hitchhiking. As I got out of her truck, she opened her wallet and gave me all her money. The next moment, I had $160 in my pocket. Wow!

Friday – Stepping Into the Unknown

Eventually a pickup came from the opposite direction.  The driver stopped.

"Are you Okay? Do you have all you need? Do you have water?"  Wow!

A few minutes later, a young couple took me with them to my destination. Wow!

When I arrived in Drumheller, I bought myself lunch and went to eat in a park by the river. As night fell, I lay down on a bench to sleep. The next morning, I woke up with the morning sun.  A female deer stood beside me, about a meter away. For a moment we stayed staring at each other. Wow!

Saturday – A Place To Sleep

After my morning coffee, I asked people if they knew a place where I could exchange my services for room and board.

I met a man who worked at the campground, and he offered to lend me his tent for a few nights. How incredible. Wow!

Sunday – Finding My Feet

Sunday morning, I met an Asian woman who was looking for tourist information about Drumheller. I led her to the Information Center, and she invited me to spend the day with her visiting the whole area. I was given both the means and the company to explore places I wouldn’t have been able to reach on foot. Wow!

Monday – New People to Meet

Monday morning, as I was in line to order my coffee, the man ahead of me decided to stop waiting and go sit with his folks at the table behind me. I asked him if he'd like me to bring him a coffee while I ordered mine.

“That would be nice, and so kind of you,” he replied.

I brought his coffee and said, "It's on me!"

He thanked me and we started chatting. I mentioned that I was looking for a place to stay and work.

Tuesday & Wednesday – Dark and Cold

Tuesday and Wednesday nights, I was back on the bench by the river. It was getting quite cold, and I told God "I don't know what your plan is but, me, I won't be able to tolerate these cold nights much longer."

Thursday – Warmed by Hearts

Thursday morning, as I went for my coffee, the gentleman from the café came up to me, "Have you found a place yet?"

I said, "Not yet!"

He handed me a business card saying, "Call my wife! She has a Bed & Breakfast and might have something for you."

I ended up staying at her B&B for three weeks. She provided me with a nice room and delicious food in exchange for work they needed done in the house. Wow!

Seven Days – 7 Wows!

I think back to that first day hitchhiking on the road. The silence. The Void. Not knowing how I would get there, where I would sleep, or how long the journey would last.

This journey wasn’t really about Drumheller at all. It was about being asked, once again, to release any “illusory” security. The farm had become my safe place, and God was calling me to let go of that too.

And from the very first Wow! God provided. Through the farmer, the pick-up driver, the young couple, the deer, and other kind men and women who showed up along the way.

From the very first Wow! God provided.

 And my conclusion …

When facing an overwhelming challenge, put yourself in the hands of God and observe the magic unfold. What is meant to be will be.

In truth, I see how living from this state of consciousness asks us to get out of the way. To let go and let God. He is the provider and the one in charge anyway.

You are loved beyond measure.
In the hands of God, you are safe.
